The road to the elections in Burundi is characterized by tensions and violence. Protests have occurred for the third day in a row, while an increasing number of Burundians is fleeing to Rwanda–which is believed to be on the verge of facing a refugee crisis.

These problems testify to the fact that in poorly institutionalized polities, elections have destabilizing effect not only on the countries going to the polls but also on the neighbouring countries.

Several signs indicate that instability is increasing in the continent and this may prevent many countries from making progress along the developmental path.
