Riek Machar, former vice president and the leader of the rebels, has been re-appointed by President Kiir.
The appointent is intended to bring to an end a conflict that started more than two years ago and was characterized by violance and human rights abuses.
Millions of citizens have been displaced, mmany of the have ended up in refugee camps established in neighboring countries, more than 50000 citizens are believed to have perished in the conflict between governmand and rebel forces–a conflict that destroyed the local economy and induced observers to fear that South Sudan could have become a failed state.
