One of the most visible signs of China’s growing presence and influence in countries like Togo is provided by the fact that, the number of Chinese workers in the country has visibly increased over the years.
In the course of our elite survey, we asked respondents to provide comments and insights on the presence and behavior.
Asked whether they think that the presence of Chinese workers (in Togo) is good for Togo? 60 per cent of the respondents indicate that the presence of Chinese workers is good for Togo, while 40 per cent of the respondents felt otherwise.
While there was considerable disagreement in this respect, there was little to no disagreement as to whether Chinese workers steal jobs from Togolese people. In fact when asked to indicate whether Chinese workers steal jobs from Togolese people, 80 per cent of the respondents felt that this is indeed the case, though some of the respondents qualified their answers by adding that Chinese workers steal jobs only in specific sectors (about which, however, respondents were either unwilling or unable to provide additional information).
The final question included in our survey questionnaire asked respondents to indicate whether they thought that Chinese workers develop good relationships with Togolese people? The analysis of the data reveals that there is quite some disagreement in this respect. In fact, while 60 per cent of the respondents suggested that Chinese workers fail to develop good relationships with the local population, 40 per cent of the respondents observed instead that Chinese workers do indeed develop good relations with the local population.
