Thabo Mbeki, new chancellor of the University of South Africa, expressed concerns over the xenophobic attacks that have occurred in South Africa in recent weeks. He made clear that xenophobic attacks are inappropriate, unbecoming and un-southafrican.

Xenophobia has no and cannot have any place in contemporary South Africa–a country that has suffered so much, for so long, until so recently the curse of racial discrimination and apartheid.

The words of Thabo Mbeki are very timely, appropriate and much welcome. And they provide the best evidence that the mild voice of reason is very much alive in South Africa and is the force that will push the country forward.
