If the referendum in Mauritania is successful, the Senate will be abolished and the flag will be changed. The government explains these changes by saying that stronger government is needed, while the opposition fears that such changes will eventually turn the country intoa a dictatorship.

Mauritania is one of the few places in which slavery has not yet been eradicated and is not known to be a thriving liberal democracy.
